But, it's a common thing SBF builders skip and that's why some high quality radiator sealant (the flake-type material, sometimes its in dry form while some suppliers have the flakes in a liquid suspension) works like a champ. Once in the radiator, it virtually guarantees no weeping along the lower head bolt row.
If you want, use a thread sealant (not RTV!) on the threads and tighten the bolts diagonally. Oh, those gaskets are available just about anywhere...Pep Boys, Autozone, Napa...just about ANY parts stores carry them.

Bentley on c13-13 says coat center bolt threads and surface contacting point of center bolt for harmonic balancer with AMV 188 001 02 . So is this a thread locker or sealer? I know I can get various grades of loctite thread locker at the auto parts store..

Nov 20, 2009 · What works best for sealing big block head bolts? Last time I used ARPs white sealer and had leaks. Years ago I used Indian head sealer but the new stuff seems to set up quickly. Also, did Chevy big blocks ever use an oil slinger between the lower cam gear and balancer? Some day I might get this 454/496 back together again Thanks Keith

Replace any faulty spacers, bolts and washers between the tank and the bowl. Now take the tank and gently place it onto the bowl. Make sure the holes are aligned. Slip a bolt with a washer into each of the aligned holes. Continue to hold the tank in the right position and put a washer on the bolt and under the bowl. Tighten the nut.

We always install a new rocker cover gasket (and use anerobic sealer to hold it in place - plus it provides an extra level of sealing) on when we re-tighten head bolts. Given that it is most likely original, I would spend the $20-$40 and just replace it. I agree with Joshua, the permatex sealant is fantastic, works with oil, gas and water. You have to let it dry overnight, but the seal is flexible and never leaks. I used it on my Webers fuel lines, water and oil jacket on the manifold studs, alternator bracket bolt that goes into the oil jacket, water pump bolts as well - will not leak.
When using a sealer, follow the recommendations of the OEM or sealer supplier as far as how much torque to apply on the bolt(s). Installing head bolts dry can lead to trouble because the increased friction in the threads can reduce clamping force up to 25 percent or more at the same indicated torque reading.
